Kings Canyon to Mt. Whitney and return, 1970

In the fall of 1969 I began my studies in architecture at Cal Poly, Pomona. A year later I switched my major to biology. But in the spring quarter, 1970, I took a course in photography and at that time purchased a Pentax Spotmatic 35 mm film camera. In the summer of 1970 I took this camera along on my first High Sierra trip. I had four rolls (36 exposures each) of Kodachrome slide film, which I used for this trip. This is the index page, which contains a link to each of the 144 slides. The slides are listed in order in which they were exposed, organized by each of the nine days of our trip.

In nine days, my brother, Vic, and I, hiked 104 miles and gained 18,600 feet in elevation. I am not sure my brother appreciated the physical exertion that would be required on this trip and perhaps I did not as well. In the last slide we see the expression on Vic's face.

This was the start of my exploration of the High Sierra, the most beautiful mountain range of the lower 48. I am so grateful that this area was preserved so that it can be experienced in the wild state. Thank you, John Muir.

Each web page containing a slide is coded for an overlay that contains navigation links. When the mouse cursor is moved over the slide, the links will appear. To view the slide, position the mouse cursor off the slide. The navigation links include forward (next slide) and back (previous side) links. In addition, there is a link back to this page and a link to the topographic map appropriate for the location. The topographic maps open in a separate browser tab. The topographic maps are labeled with the locations for each photograph.

You may wish to start by looking at a topographic map that covers the entire trip. This opens in a separate browser tab and does not include any navigation links to other pages. Then if you wish to follow trip from start to finish, then use the link for the first slide.
