First Farm - Shelby County, Iowa
Andrew and Mary's first farm was located in section 19, Monroe Township
and was 120 acres. Deeds to the land are recorded at the court house in
Harlan as follows:
Book 110, page 167: The SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 and the NE 1/4 of the SE
1/4 section 19, Township 78 Range 38 West, Containing eighty acres more
or less. Dated March 25, 1892. The deed specifies that the land was sold
to Mary for two thousand dollars by her parents, Magnus and Anna Maria
Petersen. However, family history claims that the land was a wedding gift
to Mary.
Book 152, page 380: The NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 19, Township
78 North of Range 38 West. The number of acres is 40, although this is
not specified in the deed. The deed is dated December 5, 1898. The land
was sold to Andrew for 1,000 dollars by his father-in-law (Magnus Petersen)
and mother-in-law (Anne Maria Petersen). Family history claims that Andrew
paid for this land on time, so presumably he finished paying for the land
sometime near the date of this deed.
Book 190, page 550: The East half of the SE 1/4 of section 19 and the
NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 19, Township 78 North of Range 38 West.
Andrew and Mary sell the land to Ray Johnson. The deed is dated February
26, 1908. The land was sold for eleven thousand dollars. Family history
claims that the original buyer for the land backed out, which delayed
the sale. At the date of this deed, the family had already moved to the
new farm near Allen, Nebraska.
